Welcome to Portacrin Cottage on Gola Island

Portacrin is a newly renovated traditional cottage on the beautiful Gola Island, just off the coast of Gweedore, Co. Donegal.

Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and rugged Donegal coastline the cottage enjoys the richest and most tranquil scenery you can imagine.
Right from the bedroom window you can see Errigal Mountain and the panoramic views of the Donegal coastline that includes Bloody Foreland, Gweedore and the Rosses and the popular islands of Aranmore, Owey and Inishman.

The interior fuses olde world charm with modern comfort and elegance.
The living room has been beautifully restored to capture the charm of living in the 1930s with the large open fireplace, raised grate and crane crook. Yet the facilities in this comfortable cottage will allow the visitor the conveniences of modern life.

Incorporated into the living room as in bygone days is the kitchen complete with electric hob and oven, fan, microwave, fridge freezer and washing machine.

This cottage by the sea, set in rugged landscape with mountains and high cliffs to the rear is ideal for hill walkers, artists, fishing enthusiasts and those who simply want to get away from it all and unwind. You can fish from the rocks and enjoy calming walks along the sandy beaches nearby. It sits just 40m from its own pier so you can also enjoy access to it with your own boat or yacht.

Accessed by daily passenger ferry from Bunbeg Harbour and Magheragallon Pier, the 500 acre island houses around 25 original dwellings, some still in ruins, others renovated. Also for you to enjoy on the island are goats and sheep and the sounds of the birds from the nearby bird sanctuary. You may even hear the corncrake as Summer approaches.

This homely cottage sleeps up to 6 (+3) people with its three bedrooms. The main bedroom with double and single bed and ensuite shower room is located downstairs to the rear and there are two loft bedrooms each with double and single beds, privately accessed by two separate stairways. There is WC located downstairs.

Location : Gola Island is 3km from Bunbeg and 2km from Magheragallon Pier, Derrybeg. It’s within the parish of Gweedore, home to Enya, Altan and Clannad. The passenger ferry from Bunbeg to the island takes 15 minutes and 10 minutes from Magheragallon. For keen golfers there is a 9-hole golf course located within a five minute walk from Magheragallon Pier. Donegal’s local airport at Carickfinn is just a 20 minute drive from Bunbeg. Letterkenny can be reached in under 45 minutes. Click here for a map of Gola Island in relation to the Donegal mainland.
